Internationally renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has featured an early version of our typeface Geometric, on its website for over a decade. In 2024, we were commissioned to revise and expand the design to better serve the company’s evolving digital and brand needs. The updated typeface, now named HdM Geometric, preserves the aesthetic rhythm of a monospace font while introducing six modular character widths. This approach retains the mechanical feel of the original design but reduces space usage by up to 50% for punctuation and special characters – an essential improvement for spatial efficiency across digital and analogue platforms. HdM Geometric Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic is now an integral part of Herzog & de Meuron’s brand identity.

HdM Geometric is based on an earlier design, Geometric620, which Herzog & de Meuron used for over a decade. During the revision process, the effective letter forms were optimised. The characters are now drawn more evenly, with consistent curvature throughout the character set, and ink traps are used more concisely.
HdM Geometric’s six character widths: Punctuation uses two units, wider punctuation uses three units, letters and numbers use four units, special characters use five units, ligatures use six units, and very wide characters like long arrows use eight units.
The italic styles of HdM Geometric are basically slanted version of their upright cousins, with the necessary optical corrections, of course. To give the italic styles a slightly handwritten look while retaining an overall mechanical appearance, some characters have a different shape in the upright and italic styles.
Most characters are four units wide. The three-unit word space and two-unit punctuation marks make the text appear slightly denser. This is particularly noticeable when a punctuation mark is followed by a word space (a fairly safe bet), as the amount of white space is drastically reduced. Although the underlying monospaced nature is lost, the visual effect is similar. As the number of units per line is often divisible by four, the letters tend to match the width quite frequently. For tabular use, a full monospace set is available via an OpenType function.
All four styles share the same six modular widths for each character. Applying italics, bold, or bold italics after fine-tuning has no effect on the ragging of the text.
