Services
We design original typefaces for our clients, tailored to their specific needs and crafted with care. To give you a better idea of what we do:
Profile
We design typefaces for companies, brands, and institutions. From cultural organisations seeking to express their character through a bespoke typeface, to global enterprises pursuing a coherent visual identity. We also offer consultancy in type design and typography. A selection of retail typefaces is in development.
We work with a small number of clients at a time, so that every project receives the full attention it deserves.
Benefits
A custom typeface responds to the specific needs of the client, calibrated to the proportions, context, and languages of their communication. Giving every word a distinct, resonant voice has far greater impact than a logo in the corner.
- Identity: The organisation’s identity gains an unmistakable visual voice, in the right tone and style, across every piece of written communication.
- Independence: Full control, no dependency on foundries. No risk of discontinuation, price changes, or relicensing.
- Economy: A one-time investment with no recurring fees. For organisations with a long-term perspective, a custom typeface can be the more economical choice.
- Exclusivity: No competitor can ever use the same typeface.
Scope
Our projects can vary considerably in size. For example:
- Single: A single typeface, developed for headlines and short texts.
- Pair: Two typefaces, designed for different applications and interacting with each other.
- Family: A type family (e.g. Regular, Bold, Italic, Bold Italic) with a comprehensive character set.
- System: A complex type system, comprising one or more families for text and display applications.
Process
Our work typically unfolds across six consecutive project phases:
- Briefing: We listen, ask questions, and develop the brief together.
- Research: We gather contemporary and/or historical references, formal or technical, to establish a clear foundation and ensure a distinctive result.
- Draft: Key characters are drawn and developed in several variants to allow for a broader range of possibilities.
- Refinement: One direction is developed into a full primary character set. Spacing and kerning are established in parallel with the drawings.
- Production: All characters are brought to their final form, including metrics, kerning, vertical metrics, naming, and so on.
- Delivery: Production-ready files in agreed formats, accompanied by technical documentation.
Ongoing testing guides our development throughout. We remain available for questions after handover.
Product
We deliver fully functioning font files, ready for use across desktop, web, and application environments. Typeface design combines linguistics, aesthetics, and technical craft – and with that comes a considerable range of options. Everything is explained in detail as the brief develops. The most important points for now:
- Standard file formats: otf, ttf, woff and woff2. Variable fonts for qualifying projects by agreement.
- Language coverage: Standard Latin included as standard. Extended Latin, South-Eastern European, and Vietnamese by agreement. Greek and / or Cyrillic by agreement.
- OpenType features: by agreement.
Licensing
Every commission includes a bespoke licence agreement, written in plain language without unnecessary complexity. While the intellectual property remains with the designer, clients receive a licence to use the typeface within an agreed scope. This is standard practice and is explained fully before work begins. We offer two licensing structures:
- Exclusive: The typeface is never released to other users.
- Embargoed: Exclusive licence to the client for an agreed period of a few month or years after which the typeface may enter the retail library.
Pricing
Custom type is a substantial investment and a long-term asset. Many organisations spend more on retail font licences than a custom typeface would cost outright.
We do quote each project individually. The fee reflects scope, number of styles, language coverage, and the reach of the licence. We are transparent about how we arrive at a number, and happy to discuss budget before any commitment is made.
